Founding City Hearts

City Hearts Founders Bob and Sherry Jason

Sherry and Bob Jason, City Hearts founders, were impacted by their work with troubled youth as attorneys in the LA County Public Defender’s office. Sherry also taught Ballet in Topanga Canyon, directly observing the growth and maturity of children who were supported and encouraged by their families. Sherry and Bob decided that if all children had access to the same level of support, they too may escape the risks inherent in a childhood impacted by violence, delinquency and unequal access to opportunity.

The first class, January 18, 1985, was one taught by Sherry herself. She viewed this Ballet class as an experiment to test out her theory that children needing the Arts and encouraged by caring adults were better able to make positive life choices. There was no way to know after that first lesson, the kind of longevity and impact City Hearts would continue to have in the lives of these children. After class, the children ran immediately up to Sherry saying, “we want more, we want to come everyday!”

Over the past 35 years, the impact City Hearts has made in the lives of the children, their families and the community is undeniable and profound. We hope to continue to serve our students for another 35 years! Please help us in making a tax-deductible donation today.
